The US mainstream media has widely ignored the explosive events that have unfolded in Puerto Rico over the past year: a massive student strike against Governor Fortuño’s austerity measures; a surging and unprecedented murder rate; and widespread civil rights violations by police against students

Not only is there is an ongoing human and civil rights crisis in La Isla del Encanto, there’s also a brewing environmental disaster.

Fortuño’s administration has been attempting to ramrod a gas pipeline through Puerto Rico’s pristine and ecologically sensitive Central Mountains, claiming that it’s necessary to spur economic development.

Hmm. Right.

One major explosion, and there goes the lakes, rivers, forests, and groundwater aquifers. And with that, where are the opportunities for economic development and tourism?

But what about the environmental impact statements and public hearings? According to the Fortuño’s administration, that’s unnecessary.

Watch this video, where US Rep. Gutierrez, a Puerto Rican from Chicago and longstanding freedom fighter for independence from US colonialism, exposes the lies — on the House floor — that the Fortuño administration has been propagating relative to the gas pipeline.

Also be sure to watch Rep. Guiterrez denounce police brutality against students and the media
